WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, July 20, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A driver escaped injury Friday morning after his car rolled and caught on fire on northbound Interstate 215 at 3500 South.

Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Todd Royce told Gephardt Daily the accident happened at about 10 a.m. at mile post 2 when the vehicle hit the retaining wall, rolled and caught on fire.

Fire crews joined UHP on the scene and extinguished the blaze, Royce said, and officials are now working to remove the car from where it came to rest against the retaining wall.

Royce added that investigators are looking into impairment as the cause of the crash, though it’s not yet clear whether it was alcohol or drugs that caused that impairment.

It’s not yet clear if speed was also a factor.

The two right lanes of the freeway are closed and are expected to reopen by 12:30 p.m.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
