UTAH COUNTY, Utah, June 13, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A Castle Dale woman was rescued Monday after she became stranded on a steep mountainside in American Fork Canyon.

A news release from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office states that deputies were dispatched at about 9:30 a.m., when it was reported that a 64-year-old woman was on a ledge in the canyon and unable to negotiate the extremely steep terrain.

Deputies found the woman about 40 feet above State Road 92 at mile 14.5, the release states. She was hiking with a grandson and was trying to return to the Pine Hollow Trailhead by way of a shortcut when she became stranded.

Utah County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue and the Lone Peak Fire Department responded. SAR set up a system of ropes and, after about two and a half hours, lowered the woman from the mountain.

According to the release, the temperature was about 38 degrees, with wind and blowing snow. The woman had mild hypothermia and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. She had no other injuries, and her condition was not life-threatening.
