SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 12, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is closing one of its missionary training centers.

According to a statement by Church media relations manager, Daniel Woodruff, the missionary training center located in the Dominican Republic, will close effective January, 2019.

“This decision comes as Church leaders continue to seek the best use of resources worldwide according to the needs and demands of each area,” Woodruff said. “Plans for future use of this space are still being determined.”

Missionaries designated to train at Dominican MTC will now attend one of the 12 remaining MTCs including those in Colombia, England, Mexico and Provo, Utah.

The Dominican MTC was dedicated on December 17, 2000.

The missionaries who were trained there served in the Santo Domingo East, Santo Domingo West, Santiago, Haiti, West Indies, Jamaica, Guyana, and Puerto Rico missions.

Language studies at DR MTC concentrated on English, French, and Spanish. Training there lasted three weeks, except for North American missionaries learning Spanish, who spent six weeks at the Dominican Republic MTC after having received their training at the Provo MTC.
