ST. GEORGE, Utah, Jan. 25, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Friday that it is closing the St. George Temple for a major renovation project expected to last three years.
According to a statement released by Church spokesman Daniel Woodruff, the pioneer-era temple will close later this year and reopen sometime in 2022.
Church President Russell M. Nelson announced in October 2018 that pioneer-generation temples would soon be updated and renovated.
The St. George Utah Temple, the first temple completed in Utah, was originally dedicated in April 1877. It was rededicated 43 years ago in November 1975 after being remodeled.
The St. George Temple serves Latter-day Saints in southwestern Utah and parts of Nevada and Arizona.
Additional information on the temple’s renovation will be released later this year.
