SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – September 24, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A store clerk was threatened with a crowbar as he attempted to stop a man from robbing a vending machine Thursday morning.

According to Salt Lake Police Detective Richard Chipping, around 5:30 a.m., a man was breaking into a vending machine at the Love convenience store located at 25 North Redwood Road when the clerk at the store attempted to intervene.

“The suspect then raised the crowbar in an attempt to strike the clerk when the clerk grabbed it and take it away from him,” said Chipping. “There was a small altercation but the clerk was never actually hit with the crowbar.”

The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

Chipping said it is possible that there is a connection between this incident and a string of vending machine burglaries across Utah and surrounding states but it is too early in the investigation to tell. “There were no surveillance cameras that captured the incident so we are sorting out the description of the suspect through the clerk,” said Chipping. “We have not yet found any real indication that would link the suspect in the serial case to that of this morning’s robbery.”
