Climber rescued after falling 50 feet in Little Cottonwood Canyon

LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, March 12, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 27-year-old man was rescued Saturday when he fell about 50 feet while rappelling in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Unified Police Lt. Bill Robertson said the man was climbing in the Coffin area of Little Cottonwood when he fell and landed on the rocks below. He was rappelling with at least one other person and they both had ropes, but the rope didn’t break his fall, Robertson said.

Unified Fire Authority responded to the scene, which was about 15 minutes from the roadway. The man was in stable condition with injuries to his back. He was transported by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center.

Robertson said it wasn’t known if the accident was due to equipment failure or an error on the part of the climber.
