SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Oct. 7, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Court documents reveal more details about a SWAT operation Sunday night at a South Jordan residence.

Police called to the scene ultimately took 40-year-old Nicholas Petroni into custody, arresting him for investigation of aggravated assault and felony discharge of a firearm, a second- and third-degree felony, respectively.

South Jordan police responded Sunday to a call of shots fired in the 9500 block of Caledonia Circle. They were told that a man, later identified as Nick Petroni, was intoxicated and arguing with his family, and had shot a gun in the house. The family had exited the residence, but Petroni remained inside.

Officers set up containment, and “While I was on containment, I targeted the front door of the residence and heard a single what sounded like gunshot come from inside the residence,” the officer who filed the affidavit said.

“During this Nick opened the front door and I began giving him commands to surrender to police. Nick said ‘f*** you’ and went back inside. When Nick went back inside, shortly after, I could hear what sounded like another single gunshot.”

Shortly after that, “a consecutive volley of shots could be heard from inside the residence, possibly five gunshots,” the police statement says.

“Negotiation officers made contact with Nick via phone and were able to get him to surrender to police. Nick exited the front of the residence and was semi non-compliant, not following officers’ commands. Nick eventually complied and went down to his knees. Officers moved up on Nick and I went hands on with him in an attempt to place him into custody. Nick began slightly resisting by pulling his arms away from me. Nick went down to his stomach and tucked his left arm under his waist that led to him to getting bit by a K-9 officer on the calf.”

Petroni was taken into custody, and “escorted away from the residence,” the affidavit says.

A witness from the house told police that Nicholas Petroni had reported the desire to kill himself, “then pointed and shot the gun approximately 10 feet away from (the witness). (That person) “mentioned that he didn’t feel threatened at any point and just left the residence because he didn’t want to see Nick kill himself.

“Officers cleared the residence, locating multiple bullet holes in the house inside along with multiple guns.”
