SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Fire crews battled a two-alarm blaze in an abandoned house at 1250 S. and 900 West Friday morning.

Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said 30 to 35 firefighters were called to the structure fire around 11 a.m. after several 911 calls came in to dispatch.

Asay said when crews arrived the building was fully engulfed in flames.

He said firefighters first tried to make entry into the house, but once it was determined there was a possibility of the structure collapsing, they went into defensive mode and worked to extinguish the fire from the outside.

Asay said the roof was almost destroyed, and the walls on the back side of the house suffered heavy damage, but the structure did not fully collapse, which will help with the investigation.

He said there were no utilities going to the house, and it is surrounded by a chain link fence, so investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.

Asay also confirmed there was a fire at the same location just over a year ago, caused by renovation work in the detached garage.

No one was injured in the fire, and the extent of the damage has yet to be determined.
