DRAPER, Utah, Feb. 9, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A Draper man was attacked by a deer Monday after trying to save his injured dog from the same animal.
According to a news release issued by Draper City Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter, the man intervened when a deer attacked his dog in the fenced backyard of his SunCrest-area residence.
The deer then attacked the man, and his daughter called police at just after 8 a.m. Monday.
When Animal Services Supervisor Dennis Wilson arrived on scene he found the man lying on the ground with the deer pushing its antlers down into him,” the police statement said.
Officer Wilson grabbed the deer and pulled the antlers away from the man. The man was able to get up and walk back to the house.”
Carpenter said officer Wilson eventually was able to gain control of the deer, and with the assistance of two other patrol officers, they were able to put the deer down.
“If not for the actions of officer Wilson, there could have been far more serious injuries,” the statement said.
The victim of the attack suffered significant wounds and the family dog suffered a wound to its side.
Officials said it is very rare for a deer to attack a person. Officers believe the deer may have become stuck in the yard after jumping a fence and could not get back out. The deer, in it’s attempt to flee, also sustained injuries.
