Developing: New wildfires reported in Summit County and Zion National Park

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 25, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Officials are reporting two new Utah wildfires, one ballooning by several hundred acres in a few hours Wednesday night.

The Dikker Hill Fire in Summit County east of Echo. 

Wednesday evening Utah Fire Info announced the Kolob Terrace Fire in Zion National Park and the Dikker Hill Fire in Summit County east of Echo, quickly renamed from the Bromley Canyon Fire, was estimated at 10 acres and growing at 6 p.m. By 8:30 p.m. it was reported: “The Dikker Hill Fire is estimated at 200 acres and poses a threat to structures, underground gas lines, and power lines.

“Multiple air and ground resources have been ordered, and the Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team has been ordered.” 

Near Springdale, the National Park Service said the Kolob Terrace Fire was reported in Zion’s Hop Valley at approximately 3 p.m. by a local resident. At 3 to 5 acres, it closed the Hop Valley Trail.

“Firefighters from the National Park service and partner agencies are actively addressing the flames. The Kolob Terrace road is currently open and not affected by the fire.”

At 7 p.m. Utah Fire Info shared a post from the U.S. Forest Service: “While Great Basin Team 4 is managing the Bench Lake Fire, other crews on the Sawtooth National Forest have been tackling a number of smaller fires, the latest of which is the Clarks Fire … The fire, burning in the Raft River Range of Northern Utah (Box Elder County) is estimated to have grown to about 30 acres so far today.”

Meanwhile, the Silver King Fire burning since July 5 in Beaver County earlier Wednesday was estimated at 18,189 acres with 83 percent containment. A total of 239 firefighters were on scene.

The Speirs Fire south of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area burning since July 13 in Daggett County is reported at 715 acres with 48 percent containment and 401 firefighters engaged.

Both the Silver King Fire and the Spiers Fire are believed caused by lightning.
