OGDEN, Utah, Aug. 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Weber County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a phone scam in which the caller claims to be from the sheriff’s office and tells the person that he or she has missed jury duty.
According to a WCSO news release, deputies have handled several complaints involving these phone scams.
“The caller will try to convince the victim that in order to avoid arrest the victim must transfer money by phone, through prepaid cash cards or other means. Often times, the scammers will leave a message or try to have the victim call a separate number in which they will answer as if they work for the Sheriff’s Office,” the release states, adding that the caller can be very demanding and intimidating, even threatening that they are tracking your phone.
Officials are reminding everyone that the sheriff’s office never calls people regarding missed jury duty and never asks for financial information over the phone.
“If you ever doubt the legitimacy of a call,” the release states, “hang-up and call the published phone number for that agency.”
