DRAPER, Utah, Nov. 9, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 19-year-old Draper man has been charged with the sexual assault of a girl who was 13 years old at the time the incidents allegedly took place.

Suspect Joshua Michael Vanslooten went to the child’s school, Orem Junior High School, on Aug. 23 of this year, according to a probable cause statement. He told officials he was the girl’s 17-year-old cousin and was there to pick her up.

The person he talked to, a relatively new administrator, told him to wait, but a  more experienced administrator informed him soon after that he could not meet the girl in the school or on school property.

But while waiting, Vanslooten had been texting the girl and had arranged to meet her elsewhere on school grounds, the statement says.

Vanslooten went to another door of the school, and met the teen, the statement says. The two hugged and kissed until a teacher told Vanslooten to leave, the court document says.

The 13-year-old later texted Vanslooten, and asked him to meet her at her house the next morning, after her father left for work. He did, and the two engaged in sexual behavior, then he walked her to school, the statement says. The two arranged to meet again.

Communications records also indicate Vanslooten requested photos of the girl, clothed and unclothed. They also confirmed he knew her age to be 13.

Vanslooten faces charges of:

  • Two counts of rape of a child under the age of 14, a first-degree felony
  • Two counts of sodomy upon a child under the age of 14, a first-degree felony
  • One count of enticing a minor, a second-degree felony
  • One count of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony
  • One count of dealing in harmful material to a minor by an adult, a third-degree felony
