SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – September 30, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A woman is in critical condition after failing to notice a driverĀ in front of her was yielding to a stop sign.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. David Moreno said the woman was travelling southbound on the I-15 at around 4:55 p.m. and attempted to exit at 1000 North, not noticing there was a vehicle haltedĀ at the stop sign. “We don’t know if she was distracted, on the phone or something happened but she failed to stop behind the other car,” said Sgt. Moreno. “When she realized there was a car in front she swerved over to the right side and hit a concrete barrier on the right side, ran the stop sign, crossed the intersection and hit the other wall head on, that’s what caused the vehicle to roll.”

The woman was wearing her seatbelt and so was trapped in her vehicle, but the fire department was able to extricate her. The woman was transported to IMC in critical condition but Sgt. Moreno said she is expected to survive.

He said the car was travelling between 40 and 50 mph because the driver was reducing speed to exit the freeway. The driver managed to avoid the vehicle in front that was stopped at the sign.

The freeway has now reopened.
