Elderly man dead after auto-pedestrian accident in St. George

ST. GEORGE, Utah, May 17, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — An 86-year-old man is dead after being struck in St. George by a driver who was two years his senior.

The accident happened at 1:43 p.m. Tuesday in an Albertsons parking lot at 745 N. Dixie Drive. A statement from the St. George Police Department indicates that octogenarian Fredrick Osborn was struck as he walked to his car in the parking lot. The victim suffered serious head trauma.

Osborn initially was not breathing, but was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital with a slight pulse. Osborn never regained consciousness, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The vehicle that struck Osborn, a silver 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, was driven by an 88-year-old man from Ivins. Investigators from the St. George Police Department believe that rather than push the brake, the driver mistakenly pushed the accelerator.

After striking Osborn, the Grand Am continued through a parking stall and struck a shopping cart return bin before hitting an unoccupied vehicle and coming to a stop.

The county attorney’s office will determine whether charges will be filed against the driver, the St. George Police Department statement said.

“The St. George Police Department extends their deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Osborn during this terrible time,” the news release added. “Our thoughts and hearts are with you.”
