MORGAN COUNTY, Utah, May 14, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Emergency responders from Morgan and Weber counties worked together to save a new life after the weekend birth of a breech baby who became unresponsive and stopped breathing.
An ambulance from Morgan County Fire & EMS was called to a residence that was too far from a hospital, a social media post from the agency says.
“Our ambulance was called to a residence 45 minutes away from the nearest hospital reporting a baby being born breech,” the post says.
Babies born breech come feet or buttocks first, not head first, which is the safest presentation. Healthcare workers usually attempt to manipulate babies, from the outside, to a head-first position. A breech birth puts babies and mothers at risk.
“A few minutes later, it was reported that the baby was unresponsive, not breathing, and the midwife had begun CPR,” the post continues.
Morgan County Sheriff deputies rushed to the scene, as did Morgan County Fire & EMS. They went to work, and “medics and a helicopter were also called to the scene.”
Next, Roy City Fire & Rescue joined the effort, sending medics, “and our crews were tickled to see our very own, Morgan-native firefighter, Carson Porter, on his very first medic shift after graduating!,” the Morgan County Fire post says.
“While waiting for the helicopter, crews were able to get baby breathing. Air Life flew the baby to the hospital where they are still doing well.
“We’re so happy with how the call went and we’re so grateful for our wonderful ambulance crew, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Morgan Utah, Air Life, and Roy City Fire & Rescue.”
