EMERY COUNTY, Utah, Nov. 30, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Volunteers with the Emery County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue crew took a Thanksgiving time out to rescue a hiker in need.
The woman had been hiking when she broke a leg.
“At 2 minutes to noon on Thanksgiving Day, ECSO Dispatch Center received notification that a woman had broken her leg while hiking in Little Wild Horse Canyon. SAR team members responded to Little Wild Horse Canyon and hiked almost to the top of the canyon carrying all of their equipment with them. SAR received support from Goblin Valley State Park employees.
“Rescuers were able to locate the 37-year-old female and apply first aid to her broken lower right leg before packaging her for transport. Rescuers and hikers carried the victim for over a quarter mile through rough and technical terrain.
“Classic Air Medical helicopter was able to find a landing zone with the help of SAR members and medevac the victim to a Utah hospital.
“These rescuers put themselves in very difficult and dangerous places to help others when they should have been home dealing with a food coma and cheering on the Lions or Bears, the Giants or Cowboys, or the Dolphins or Packers,” Emery County Sheriff Tyson Huntington said in his post.
“Instead of resting from their labors for a few hours and dozing off in the La-Z-Boy, they are wading through waist deep freezing water doing their best to remember to lift with their legs instead of their backs.
“I think I can speak for everyone and say we are thankful for these rescuers and their families who sacrificed Thanksgiving Day to serve others,” the post says. “Bravo team, Bravo!”
