Ensign Peak brush fire burns 20 acres

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 6, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Hikers were being evacuated late Saturday afternoon after a brush fire ignited near the Ensign Peak trailhead north of Salt Lake City, fire department officials said.

The fire was reported at 5:54 p.m. and burned about 20 acres, Salt Lake City Fire Dept. Capt. Mark Bednarik said.

Salt Lake firefighters, along with the U.S. Forest Service, were at the scene and had the fire 100 percent contained by 7 p.m., but crews were still keeping an eye on hot spots.

No homes were threatened, and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation.

Police directed traffic and pedestrians away from the trail. The public is asked to avoid the area while crews monitor the fire overnight.
