SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 29, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday that the University of Utah will receive $2 million in Brownfields Grants to assess and clean up contaminated sites in Salt Lake City.

The university plans to address soil and groundwater contamination at the SLC Station Center site, where previous assessments found arsenic and volatile organic compounds.

The work is part of a larger plan for commercial reuse of the property in line with Salt Lake City’s Community Revitalization Agency’s Rio Grande Plan.

“The Brownfields program is about turning opportunity into action, and the University of Utah has done exactly that,” said Region 8 Administrator Cyrus Western in an EPA news release. “This funding is a smart use of resources that reflects our commitment to both economic growth and environmental responsibility.”

The grants are part of $267 million in Brownfields funding announced nationally by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.

The EPA’s Brownfields program aims to protect human health and the environment while promoting economic development, the news release said.
