SANDY, Utah, Feb. 26, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Four men were taken in custody and two others are on the run after Salt Lake City-based FBI agents — in conjunction with local law enforcement officers — busted suspected members of an ATM theft ring late Sunday night.

Gephardt Daily cameras were the only ones there when agents swooped down on the unsuspecting thieves who were attempting to steal cash from an ATM at the Deseret First Credit Union, 9400 S. 1300 East.

Investigators say four of the suspects arrived at the credit union in two separate vehicles, not long after they had tried to knock off another ATM at the America First Credit Union at 9400 S. Highland Drive.

Two other suspects, believed to be acting as lookouts, escaped in a third car that was parked a couple hundred yards from the credit union as the bust took place.

The FBI is remaining tight-lipped about the arrests.

In a statement released late Monday, the FBI’s public information officer, Sandra Barker, confirmed to Gephardt Daily “the FBI and United States Secret Service, along with other federal and local law enforcement agencies, conducted an operation on Sunday, February 25, 2018, in Sandy.”

Barker said more information would be forthcoming Tuesday.

The Utah Highway Patrol has also confirmed taking part in the operation. Lt. Todd Royce told Gephardt Daily a Department of Public Safety helicopter had been used to track suspects over the last few days.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
