SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 16, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) -- A residence at 836 W. 400 North is considered a total loss, but owners were away and firefighters are safe after the two alarm fire.

Capt. Brandt Hancuff, Salt Lake City Fire, said multiple calls came to dispatch at about 7:50 a.m. Sunday, "and our first arriving crews arrived to find heavy smoke with a lot of flames coming out of a house."

Neighbors told fire crews that no one was currently residing in the house, Hancuff said, but firefighters "still did a search to ensure that nobody was inside the structure.

"After they completed the search, it was determined to go to a defensive fire because of the dangerous conditions that it posed for our firefighters. So we went defensive on it, and we focused primarily on protecting the exposures to the east and west of the structure."

The fire was difficult to douse due to the quantity of furniture and belongings inside, Hancuff said.

"It's kind of been difficult for the firefight because of how much was inside of the structure," he said, adding that belongings blocked firefighters' access to some areas.

At the peak, 50 Salt Lake City firefighters were at the scene, Hancuff said.

Gephardt Daily will share any additional information that is released.
