VIDEO: Emotions Run High As Names Of Fallen Utah Officers Doug Barney, Leon May Are Added To Memorial Wall

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 5, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) ─ The loss of two Utah police law enforcement officers ─ one of whom was killed in January, the other more than 60 years earlier ─ brought tears to the eyes of those who gathered in their honor Thursday at the Utah State Capitol.

Unified Police Officer Doug Barney died just four months ago, gunned down by a wanted fugitive while responding to reports of an auto accident on Jan. 17.

Leon Albert May, an officer with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, lost his life in 1953 while searching for a child who had fallen into the Bear River.

While the men’s sacrifices took place a half century apart, they were joined together Thursday, their names enshrined together forever on the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial.
