VIRGIN, Utah, June 6, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An 18-year-old man died after rolling his vehicle in an attempt to pass a co-worker on State Route 9 in Virgin late Sunday night.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the accident happened at 11 p.m. near mile post 20 when Kamen King Kanosh, 18, of La Verkin, was traveling west in a white 2012 Mustang convertible and had attempted to pass the car in front of him.
SR-9 is a two lane highway, and Kanosh went to pass his co-worker just as they came up to a “blind curve” in the road. Royce said as Kanosh crossed the double yellow lines in the road, he came upon another vehicle traveling east at the same time.
Kanosh swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision then over-corrected back to the left and rolled off the right shoulder of the roadway.
Rocye said Kanosh was wearing his seat belt, but because he was in a convertible, he sustained severe head injuries.
The accident is under investigation, but speed and possible impairment are both being considered factors. Witnesses estimated a speed of over 90 mph at the time of the accident.
