Police investigate fatal shooting in downtown Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 20, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police investigators are on the scene of a fatal shooting in downtown Salt Lake City.

The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in the plaza between the Workforce Services Building at 140 E. 300 South and the Utah Department of Commerce.

Police say the victim, described only has a white male, was shot after an encounter with an armed security guard.

Witnesses told Gephardt Daily they heard shouting followed by at least three gunshots.

Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer said it appeared the security guard and the man who was shot were involved in a physical altercation when the man tried to grab the security guard’s pistol.

Shearer said the guard then opened fire, mortally wounding the alleged assailant who died on the downtown sidewalk.

Sgt. Shearer said the security guard was being questioned and the police investigation is ongoing.
