SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 17, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — Fire crews are warning pet owners to be vigilant after a Doberman fell through ice on a frozen pond Thursday.
Salt Lake Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said crews were called to Forest Dale Golf Course, 2375 S. 900 East, at around 10:15 a.m. Asay said the dog and its owner were out on a walk and the dog ran about 10 feet out on the ice and fell through.
Crews took only a couple of minutes to arrive on scene, placed a ladder on the ice, then broke a path so the dog was able to safely swim to the shore. The owner quickly took the dog home and warmed him up.
If a person or a pet falls through the ice, Asay said people should not go out onto the ice to help. Call 911 then find a branch or rope, reach it out to the person and help them pull themselves ashore.
Asay also said winter conditions are ideal for having pets on leashes, and owners should check city ordinances to see whether this is required.
