SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Nov. 8, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — South Jordan fire investigators have determined a natural gas leak caused the deadly explosion and fire that claimed the life of a 15-year-old Bingham High School student Wednesday.

According to a statement released Thursday night by the South Jordan Fire Department, “The source of the gas leak remains under investigation, and investigators are working diligently to determine exactly where and how it originated.

“Additional investigators will be working at the scene through the weekend and hope to have more information available by early next week.”

The devastating blast and ensuing 2-alarm fire destroyed the home at 10593 S. 3210 West and damaged numerous nearby residences which were showered with debris.

Investigators say the 15-year-old victim was a family member and the only one at home at the time of the explosion.

The family is asking the teen’s name be withheld at this time.

South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey announced the establishment of a GoFundMe page on the family’s behalf and asked their privacy be respected as they deal with the devastating loss.

“Our community has experienced an unimaginable tragedy with the passing of one of our residents after their family home exploded yesterday, Ramsey wrote. “Our hearts are broken as we mourn alongside the family, friends, neighbors, and all who are grieving during this devastating time.

“Many of you have asked us how they can help. Community members have stepped up, and a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-the-hansen-family-after-explosion) has been created to support the family, who lost everything in the fire. If you’re interested in donating, please search ‘Support the Hansen Family After House Explosion’ on GoFundMe. Be sure to use these exact words to find the correct page, which was created by Sami D.

“The family has requested privacy during this painful time to grieve and come to terms with their loss, and we ask that everyone respect their wishes.”

Bingham High School has counselors available to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
