KEARNS, Utah, Sept. 6, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire behind Kearns High School Wednesday morning.
Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Steve Prokopis told Gephardt Daily the grass fire occurred in a field near near 5762 S. 4580 West. The blaze broke out at approximately 11 a.m. and about a dozen firefighters had it under control in 20 minutes.
Prokopis said the fire started near the railroad tracks and damaged a garage before it was extinguished. An exact estimate of the damages is not yet available.
Prokopis said investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. He said the proximity to the railroad tracks could have been a factor and there is also foot traffic through the field, so authorities have not ruled out the possibility the blaze could have been human caused.
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
