RIVERTON, Utah, July 4, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A family was able to evacuate their home when a fire broke out Tuesday afternoon, but the structure was destroyed by the blaze.

Unified Fire Authority spokesman Steve Prokopis said the fire started around 4:20 p.m., at the single-family home at 2253 W. 13400 South.

Crews arrived to find the home fully involved, and they immediately went into “defensive mode” to try to get control of it and prevent the flames from spreading to other property.

Prokopis said it took about 40 minutes to get it under control.

The family got out safely, and no pets were reported missing, he said, but a firefighter was transported to the hospital, possibly for heat exhaustion.

In addition to UFA, firefighters from Draper, South Jordan and Bluffdale responded, totaling about 20 on scene.

Prokopis said the fire appears to have started on a back deck, but the exact cause is still under investigation. He didn’t have a dollar estimate of damages, but said the home is a total loss. The family was making arrangements for a place to stay.
