MURRAY, Utah, Nov. 5, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A fire at a Murray residence Saturday night was quickly knocked down due largely to the home’s location — within a block or two of the Murray Fire Department.
“We’re talking about a minute response time, and that’s if they drove slow,” said Deputy Chief John Harris, of the Murray Fire Department.
No one was injured in the fire, which was contained to a corner room in the basement, Harris said. The call, from a construction worker in the house, came to dispatch at about 9 p.m.
“He was soldering pipes in the basement when the insulation around where he was working caught fire,” Harris said. “He attempted to extinguish it, but it went too fast up the walls. He evacuated the structure, and we responded.”
About 20 firefighters from Murray and the Unified Fire Authority responded to the scene, at 5853 Golden Drive. The fire was doused quickly, but not before smoke filled the structure, which was having sheetrock added.
“Since there’s not sheetrock in the home right now, the fire was able to travel really quickly through the walls, and we actually thought it might get into the roof as well, but that was just the smoke that was traveling,” Harris said.
“So the fire was contained in the basement, and it did move up the wall, but not too far.”
