KANE COUNTY, Utah, May 12, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Charges were filed in Kane County Wednesday against a woman suspected of causing the traffic death of a Murray woman in September of 2020.
The Sept. 23 collision on U.S. 89 resulted in the death of 20-year-old Annikka Jaramillo, of Murray, a passenger in a Volkswagen hit by an SUV driven by Nthenya Maingi Patrick, 37, of Miami Beach, Florida.
Patrick is now facing charges of:
- Manslaughter, a second-degree felony
- Reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor
A probable cause statement filed by an officer of the Utah Highway Patrol says Patrick was driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed on U.S. 89 when she attempted to pass a slow-moving truck in a no-passing zone.
“While speeding she passed a first vehicle in a no passing zone, or towards the end of a passing zone,” the statement says. “She then attempted to pass a semi truck in a no-passing zone while approaching the crest of a hill and struck another vehicle in the on-coming lane.
“This resulted in the death of a passenger and the serious bodily injury of the driver of the on-coming vehicle.”
Jaramillo died at the scene. Patrick and the Volkswagen’s driver both were transported to an area hospital to be treated for injuries.
