SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 16, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A two-alarm fire Friday night at 647 S. 1200 East has displaced all the residents of Quail Run Apartments.

Salt Lake City Fire crews were called to the scene at 8:58 p.m. and found heavy smoke in a basement apartment, SLCFD spokesman Jasen  Asay said.

Asay said the fire was accidental and started when a tenant was frying donuts in the kitchen of a basement apartment and the grease caught fire and moved up the wall.

“The tenant evacuated the building and called 911, which is exactly what they were supposed to do,” Asay said. He said it’s very beneficial for firefighters to arrive at an empty building, because they can focus on putting out the fire and not spend time evacuating people.

Thirty to 35 firefighters responded and had the fire out within about 30 minutes.

Quail Run is a three-story building, with 18 apartments, six on each floor. The basement unit and part of a hallway had severe damage from the fire, but the building sustained heavy smoke and water damage, as the interior sprinklers were set off in addition to fire crews spraying the building.

The owner of the building told officials that 30 to 35 people have been displaced by the fire.

There were no injuries. Investigators were still at the scene late Friday night.
