SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 19, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man wanted by the Layton Police Department for crimes against a child has been captured by U.S. Marshals in San Francisco.

Brian Helton, 45, was taken into custody on Wednesday, Sept. 19, and has been formally charged with sodomy of a child, aggravated sexual abuse of a child, and object rape of a child.

“Helton was staying with a family friend in Davis County after moving from Chicago to Utah,” a statement from the U.S. Marshals Office says.

“He landed in Layton and began to exploit an innocent child. While staying in the family’s home he sexually abused one of the children living just down the hall from him. This illicit behavior transpired on at least two separate occasions over a two-week period. Once the child told the parents what was going on, Helton immediately packed up his few belongings and fled the state, and went back to Chicago.”

U.S. Marshals from the District of Utah became involved, and the search for Helton ultimately went international, the statement says. Officers always seemed to be a step behind Helton, until they discovered his location in Thailand.

“After Helton began to suspect the Royal Thai Police were getting close to making an apprehension, he fled again, this time to Japan in an attempt to sneak back into the United States,” the statement says.

Japanese officials, through Interpol, alerted U.S. Marshals that Helton was boarding a flight to San Francisco.

“It was in the airport where U.S. Marshalls, Department of Homeland Security, and United States Customs & Border Patrol agents were waiting to apprehend him,” the statement says. “He was surprised, and quickly taken into custody without further incident.”

Officials commented on the case:

“Through the tireless efforts of our investigators, including our domestic and international partners, this fugitive who has been on the run for over two years will finally be brought to justice,” said U.S. Marshal Matthew D. Harris.

“Time may pass, but deputy U.S. Marshals never quit until we find our man.

Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Derryl Spencer also shared a thought:

“It doesn’t matter where in the world the fugitive chooses to run, they will eventually get caught.”
