SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 2, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Gov. Gary R. Herbert has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the State of Utah in remembrance of the victims of the mass shooting in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Friday.
In coordination with a proclamation from President Donald Trump, the flag lowering is effective immediately and flags will be flown at half staff at all state facilities and public grounds until sunset on June 4, said a news release from the Office of the Governor.
People and businesses are encouraged to fly the flag at half staff for the same length of time, the news release said.
The gunman in Friday’s mass shooting in Virginia Beach had filed to leave his job before opening fire on his workplace, city officials said on Sunday, UPI reported.
The suspected gunman, Dewayne Craddock, a 40-year-old engineer who worked in public utilities for about 15 years, put in his two-week notice hours before he would carry out an attack on Virginia Beach Municipal Center, killing 12 people and dying in a shootout with police.
The suspect began by killing a victim in a car before entering the building and opening fire. All but one of the people killed in the shooting were public works department employees.
