Granger High Student Killed In Distracted Driver Crash

A Wednesday afternoon crash on Bangerter Highway near Parkway Boulevard has claimed the life of a Granger High School student.

According to West Valley Police, 15-year-old Rodrigo Zavala-Vargas Jr., a resident of Salt Lake City, died when the driver of an SUV who was busy cleaning her sunglasses smashed in the back the vehicle Lopez was riding in.

Police say Lopez was in the backseat of the car at the time of the crash. A second passenger riding in the front seat, along with the driver, were injured.

Police say the woman’s SUV was traveling fifty miles an hour at the time of the accident. The car Lopez was in was at a standstill.

The 25-year-old driver of the SUV was unhurt, although police say criminal charges may be pending.
