WASHINGTON CITY, Utah, May 4, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A fall drew multiple emergency responders to Gunlock Falls Friday afternoon, and inspired a seasonal warning.
The 2 p.m. call led Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue to mention last season’s multiple injuries, broken bones and a near drowning at the popular recreation spot.
The agency as well as Santa Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue and the Washington County Sheriff‘s Office responded to the incident, DVFR said Friday evening online. But the fallen person was treated on-scene and did not require a trip to a hospital.
During last year’s season at Gunlock Falls, fed by Gunlock Reservoir and part of Gunlock State Park, DVFR said it “responded to dozens of calls with injuries, including severely broken bones and a near drowning that required medical intervention.
“We want everyone to enjoy the beauty of Gunlock Falls, but please do so safely and with the understanding that emergency assistance can sometimes take 30 minutes or more to arrive.”
Gunlock Falls is 15 miles northwest of St. George. As the weather warms, DVFR said it expects increasing numbers of visitors and people choosing to climb and swim around the falls.
“We urge everyone to exercise great care around the falls, as the rock is slippery and falling from these heights can result in serious injury, including drowning.
“Never jump or dive from the falls, as rocks and other obstacles under the water are not always visible from the surface.”
Gunlock State Park currently has a similar warning on its web page.
“The waterfalls at Gunlock State Park are FLOWING. Recreating on the rocks near the waterfalls is dangerous.
“Rocks are slick, water is swift and covered hazards exist in the pools. We strongly encourage visitors to use caution and be observant in the area. Please follow us on Facebook for updates.”
