SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 16, 2022 (Gephardt Daily) — A wrong-way driver heading south on northbound Interstate 215 West slammed head-on into a semi early Sunday, sending one person to the hospital in critical condition and three with less serious injuries.
The accident happened at about 2:51 a.m. at 600 south, near the Interstate 80 interchange.
The semi caught fire and became fully engulfed. The passenger vehicle spun off the freeway to the right shoulder.
Both occupants in the semi were transported to an area hospital in good condition, a statement from Utah Highway Patrol says. Neither occupant of the passenger car was restrained at the time of the crash. Both occupants of the passenger vehicle were transported to an area hospital, the driver in fair condition and the passenger in extremely critical condition.
Impairment is being investigated as a possible cause of the crash. Agencies investigating the incident include the State Bureau of Investigation, UHP and MCIT.
Northbound I-215 was shut down during the investigation.
