HEBER CITY, Utah, Nov. 5, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police put out a fraud alert Monday, warning residents about “skimmers,” and it’s something everyone should keep in mind when paying with plastic.

The Heber City Police Department posted on Facebook that a local gas station reported  a skimming device had been found on one of their gas pumps.

The post includes an explanation of what skimming devices are, quoting software analyst and PC Magazine author Max Eddy. It also offers tips on how to protect yourself from these malicious card-reading devices:

  • Pay inside
  • Use pumps closest to a building (camera range)
  • Use a credit card, not a debit card
  • Make sure to always check your statements

The police finished the post on a positive note, saying, “Luckily this device was located and had not gotten back into the hands of the thief that placed it. Huge Shout Out to the Company for checking their gas pumps regularly!!!”
