Holi originated in India and is celebrated with special importance. It solemnizes the love of Radha and Krishna. The spraying of colored powders recalls the love sport of Lord Krishna and His devotees.

Young and old alike are covered with colors (red, green, yellow, blue, black and silver). People in small groups are seen singing, dancing and throwing colors on each other.

The weekend is full of entertainment from many different bands to DJ’s and traditional dances. Along with the throwing of colors into the air where the idea is that you are casting your worries away by using powdered color chalk and tossing them into the wind.

The color, noise and entertainment of the event brings a feeling of oneness and sense of brotherhood. The festival is meant to bring home the lesson of spiritual and social harmony.

People go for a variety of reasons and while there are many who do not understand the tradition behind the celebration they know that it is a lot of fun and a great place for friends to spend time together.

Kenzie Fukuda says she always goes, “… because it’s a fun celebration and it’s something different to do.”  Kenzie gone the last four years and never seems to mind the plethora of color that ends up all over her clothes, hair and car. “It takes about three or four days to get all the color out of my nose and ears and my body is full of color, on my back, sides, feet, arms. You name it, the color is there, but it is always worth it.”

Known as one of the biggest celebrations in Utah, the color festival will continue tomorrow from 11-4 but if you miss it, you can catch the next one in Salt Lake City on May 9, 2015.
