SANDY, Utah, May 6, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Fire destroyed a Sandy home Saturday and sent the homeowner to the hospital with non-life-threatening burns.

Sandy Fire Department Deputy Chief Derek Maxfield said that late Saturday afternoon, crews were called to a house fire and possible burn victim.

When firefighters arrived, everyone had already evacuated and the home was fully engulfed.

“The homeowner had been involved a little bit,” Maxfield said. “He was transported to an area hospital.”

No information was immediately available regarding the homeowner’s condition, but Maxfield said he didn’t think the man’s injuries were severe or life-threatening.

Maxfield said, “At this time, it’s looking like the fire might have started, possibly, by welding, but an investigator is coming to determine the cause and location (of its origin).”

Crews from multiple Sandy stations, with assistance from the Unified Fire Authority, were quick to respond, Maxfield said, but due to the amount of burning and how involved the structure was, the home “looks like pretty much a total loss.”

Crews would be staying on scene to do cleanup and salvage, he said.

A neighboring home also was damaged by the heat radiating from the blaze, and Maxfield estimated that damage at $5,000 to $10,000.

He said there were no injuries except to the homeowner, and the only pets in the home were possibly a couple of birds. Considering the condition of the structure, he said, the birds would not have survived.
