UTAH, Dec. 2, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Highway Patrol is warning drivers to slow down after more than 200 weather-related crashes were reported across central and northern Utah Sunday.

A tweet from UHP said: “Troopers near Nephi are struggling to keep up with responding to crashes on I-15. Help us get the word out…PLEASE SLOW DOWN!!! If you think you’re driving slow enough…knock 10-15 more mph off your speed…that’s probably about right.”

A follow-up tweet said: “In snow-packed roads you should have 8-10 seconds of following distance. If/when that car in front of you spins out, you’ll want the extra time to react and avoid it.”

“Around 5:30 am crashes started piling near Nephi on I-15. Troopers have been working hard to keep up with the weekend traffic and adverse road conditions. Lt Scott Robertson has issued a plea for drivers to slow down in the area and be aware of icy roads through Juab County. Juab County UHP Troopers have handled 70+ crashes and slide offs today,” UHP said in a news release Sunday.

Utah Department of Transportation issued a weather warning Sunday, stating:

“Cold air and northwesterly winds move in this afternoon through Monday morning, bringing with it a risk for patchy ice developing over mountain routes tonight and a chance for lake effect snowfall for northern Salt Lake and southern Utah Counties. The greatest chance of lake effect snow bands forming is overnight Sunday into Monday morning’s early commute where slick/snow covered roads are possible. Uncertainty is high with lake effect snowfall, as its formation depends on an array of factors.”

According to UDOT, the following routes will experience weather-related travel concerns during the forecast period:

  • I-15, Ogden to Nephi
  • I-84, Ogden through Echo Jct.
  • I-80, Lake Point to WY State Line
  • US-40, I-80 Jct. to Duchesne
  • US-89, Spanish Fork to Mt. Pleasant
  • US-191, Indian Canyon Summit to Price, La Sal to Blanding
  • US-6, Thistle to Price SR-190, Entire Route
  • SR-210, Entire Route

Another snowstorm is forecast for northern Utah on Wednesday.
