HURRICANE, Utah, March 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — One woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash on State Route 59 in Southern Utah Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at approximately 2 p.m. on SR-59 at mile post 21, Hurricane City Police Department said in a news release.

“Officers arrived on scene and found the two vehicles partially blocking SR-59,” the statement said. “The highway was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes while emergency crews worked the scene.”

Investigators believe that a Nissan Xterra traveling north on SR-59 left the road briefly, and when the vehicle re-entered the roadway, the driver over-corrected and the vehicle crossed into oncoming southbound traffic.

The Xterra was struck broadside by a Nissan Frontier pickup truck.

The female driver of the Xterra was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George with serious injuries, and later died.

Both occupants of the Frontier were transported to DRMC with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is still ongoing and it’s not yet known why the Xterra left the roadway or the speed at which the vehicles were traveling.

Besides the Hurricane Police Department, agencies that responded to the scene were Hurricane Valley Fire Department and Utah Highway Patrol.

The deceased woman has not been identified pending notification of family members.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
