CLEARFIELD, Utah, Oct. 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Evening rush hour ground to a halt on Interstate 15 Monday when police shut down the freeway in both directions while they worked to take an armed suspect into custody.
The incident began at about 5:30 p.m. in Clearfield and moved onto I-15, where police made sure the man couldn’t access Hill Air Force Base while they set up a containment area.
At about 9 p.m., the suspect was finally taken into custody, and officials were in the process of reopening I-15.
Trevor Cahoon, communications manager for Clearfield City, told reporters that officers were responding to an unrelated incident near Jimmy John’s when they saw the man slumped over on the side of the road.
When they approached him to see if he was all right, Cahoon said, the man took off on foot and went onto the freeway. Unsure if he presented a threat to the police, the public or himself, officers shut down I-15 and set up a containment area.
SWAT was called out to assist, and a negotiator was on scene talking with the man.
Cahoon said Monday night that police are not identifying the man and no further details are being released at this time.
Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
