PROVO, Utah, Sept. 23, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 22-year-old Brigham Young University student from South America died Sunday evening after he collided with a vehicle while riding a longboard in Provo.

Provo Police Department Detective Nick Dupaix told Gephardt Daily the international student was riding a longboard west on Stadium Avenue towards Canyon Road at approximately 8:15 p.m. Sunday. The longboarder collided with a four-door sedan that was traveling southbound on Canyon Road.

Dupaix said it’s not clear at this time exactly why the student collided with the car but he was thrown several feet.

A Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) is working to establish how fast the longboarder and the car were traveling and the sequence of events that led up to the collision.

The driver of the car said she did not notice the student before the crash occurred.

Paramedics treated the student at the scene and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he passed away.

It’s not known if the longboarder was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. His identity has not yet been released as officials are working to contact his family.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
