IRON COUNTY, Utah, June 4, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) -- An Iron County man has been sentenced to up to five years in prison after being found guilty of driving under the influence and assault on a peace officer.

Thomas Vaughn, 61, was sentenced last month to zero to five years in the Utah State Prison following his conviction for Driving Under the Influence and Assault on a Peace Officer.

"This marks Vaughn’s 10th DUI conviction, a disturbing milestone that underscores the ongoing threat he poses to public safety," says a statement issued by the Iron County Attorney's Office.

"The prison term will run consecutively to a separate DUI sentence for which Vaughn was already on parole at the time of the current offense."

Vaughn’s criminal history includes multiple DUI and assault convictions, including cases in 2020 where the Iron County Attorney’s Office successfully argued for prison, the news release says.

"Consistent with our office’s long-standing position, we advocated for prison time in those 2020 cases to protect the community from a repeat offender who continues to endanger others through his reckless and criminal behavior. He was subsequently released on parole in 2023.

"The Iron County Attorney’s Office remains committed to aggressively prosecuting repeat DUI offenders. We will continue to seek prison time for individuals whose repeated disregard for the law makes them a clear and present danger to our community. Ultimately, the Utah Board of Pardons will determine how long the defendant will remain in prison."
