SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 6, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A jaywalker who was struck and killed Tuesday morning in the area of 1300 East and the Interstate 80 has been identified.

Lester Dewey, 41, was killed on the 1300 East overpass at approximately 6:30 a.m. when he and someone believed to be his brother tried to cross the road, but not in a crosswalk, said Salt Lake City Police spokesman Det. Greg Wilking. Because it was still dark outside, the driver who hit Dewey did not see him, Wilking said.

There was a crosswalk about 30 to 40 yards away from where the man was struck, Wilking added.

“This is a case where, had they been crossing where and when they should have been, it is very unlikely this would have happened,” Wilking said. “Even if you are in a crosswalk, you need to wait to get the signal to cross. Shortcuts aren’t a good idea.”

The other man was not injured.

All northbound lanes were closed on 1300 East at the I-80 ramps, and the off-ramp from eastbound I-80 to 1300 East was also closed, until approximately noon.
