KEARNS, Utah, Feb. 26, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A student from a Kearns junior high  was charged this weekend after police say he posted a possible threat concerning his school on Snapchat.

The 13-year-old boy, a student at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, posted a picture of himself, holding a rifle in his lap, on social media site Snapchat.

A text message with the photo warned viewers “… not come to school on Monday.

Unified Police officers coordinated efforts with Granite School District Police Department. Within an hour, the suspect and his school were identified.

Officers then went to the student’s home to interview him and his parents. It was determined that the gun pictured was an Airsoft rifle, and there was no immediate threat to the school.

“Based on the threat in the social media post, the student was charged with Terroristic Threats, which is punishable as a third-degree felony,” a UPD statement said.

The boy was left in the care of his parents and will await administrative action by Granite School District.

“It is the position of the Unified Police Department that all threats against schools, regardless of the nature, will be treated as real and investigated thoroughly,” the statement said.
