SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 23, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) -- Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has issued an executive order directing that H.B. 267, passed by Utah lawmakers in the February legislative session despite significant public opposition, will go before voters in November of next year.
The bill bans public sector unions from engaging in collective bargaining, limits the use of public money and property for union activities, and restricts access to the Union Retirement System for union employees, among other directives.
A coalition of labor unions, including those representing teachers, firefighters, and police unions, gathered signatures for a ballot referendum that could overturn the law, depending on the results of the public vote.
The referendum application was submitted on March 7 of this year, and was signed by more than enough registered voters to qualify for the referendum.
"H.B. 267 will not take effect unless and until it is approved by a vote of the people in the 2026 General Election," says a proclamation signed by Cox.
That election is scheduled for Nov. 3 of next year.
