LAYTON, Utah, Oct. 29, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews responded to a fire at a residence in Layton on Sunday afternoon that caused $150,000 in damages.

Battalion chief for Layton City Fire Jason N. Cook told Gephardt Daily the first call about the blaze, which originated in the garage of the home in the area of 900 E. 3350 North, came in just before 4 p.m. Several neighbors reported they saw fire originating from the garage.

“Our crews arrived to find exactly that, a well-involved garage that had extended to the exterior of the home, and up into the rest of the structure,” Cook said.

The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire but arrived soon after.

Firefighters were able to get the family dogs from the residence, but several other pets did not survive.

There were minor injuries to three firefighters, who were treated on scene.

Cook said the garage is a complete loss, and the fire extended up to at least two of the bedrooms, which sustained significant fire damage. The rest of the home has significant smoke damage. A vehicle and motorcycle were also damaged, and the total damage is estimated at $150,000.

Cook said that with the garage doors being up, crews had the opportunity to attack the fire from the front, while simultaneously getting crews through the front door and into the bedrooms.

“The fire itself went down pretty quickly,” Cook said. “There’s a vehicle in the garage, and as you might imagine with flammables and gas and everything that goes along with it, it’s been the stubborn part to get out, because we can’t bring the vehicle out of the garage to finish extinguishment of it, but it looks like we’re finishing extinguishment right now and we’ll probably be here for several hours to determine cause, and to finish any overhaul and help the homeowner with some salvage of their belongings.”

The cause of the fire has not been determined, however it is not considered suspicious in nature.

The North Davis Fire District and Hill Air Force Base Fire Department were on scene to assist with the incident.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
