SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 21, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released a statement after a Holladay man who reportedly served locally as a high councilor was arrested on suspicion of voyeurism in Nashville.
Steven Murdock, 55, was arrested Tuesday after a woman told police that Murdock had recorded her on his phone while she was changing clothes in an H&M dressing room at a mall.
Alleged victim Alondra Alcala, interviewed by Fox 17 news in Tennessee, said she was partially undressed in the changing room when she spotted the phone.
“In the corner of the dressing room — at the top — there was a camera phone, an iPhone, pointing down at me,” Alcala told WZTV. “So obviously I knew I was being recorded. I freaked out. I froze.”
Alcala said she dressed and tracked down the man, later identified as Murdock, who was trying to delete images from his phone.
“Thankfully, I was able to slap it out of his hand, and take it, and run out,” she said.
According to reports, Murdock posted the $1,000 bail and was released from jail, with a court date set for Sept. 6.
LDS Church spokesman Eric Hawkins shared the following statement on the case with Gephardt Daily:
This type of behavior is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated from any Church member. This individual had previously served as a bishop (volunteer, unpaid leader) of a local congregation, and then as a high councilor (a volunteer position that helps with the administration of several local congregations).
When local leaders learned of the arrest and charges, he was immediately removed from all responsibilities. A person that engages in this type of behavior may have their Church privileges restricted or may face the potential loss of Church membership.
