SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The LDS Church announced Tuesday that it will cut ties with the Boy Scouts of America effective the end of next year.

A joint statement from the BSA and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints thanks the “thousands of Scout leaders and volunteers who have selflessly served over the years in Church-sponsored Scouting Units, including local BSA districts and councils.”

The letter says that as an international organization with the majority of membership outside of the United States, the Church “has increasingly felt the need to create and implement a uniform youth leadership and development program that serves its membership globally.

“In so doing, it will be necessary for the Church to discontinue its role as a chartered partner with BSA.”

The transition to use of a Church-run program will be complete as of Dec. 31, 2019, the statement said.
