LDS Missionary dies while serving in Lisbon, Portugal

LISBON, Portugal, Jan. 29, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the death of a young missionary who was serving in Portugal.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Elder Joao Victor Rodrigues Gondim, age 20, who was serving in the Portugal Lisbon Mission,” a statement from the LDS Church says.

“Elder Gondim died Monday after collapsing during a soccer game with some other missionaries. The cause of his death is unknown. Elder Gondim had been serving since July 2017 and is from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“Our hearts go out to his family as they mourn his passing. We pray they will feel peace and support during this difficult time. The Church is working to provide counseling to those missionaries who witnessed this tragedy.”
